THE SEVEN WORDS OF CHRIST ON THE CROSS
Presentation
Concert given by the Quatuor Opale, as part of the Musiques Sacrées de l'Agly Festival
In 1787, the Spanish city of Cadiz was the scene of a ceremony commemorating the death of Christ. Haydn was commissioned to compose the musical pieces to be performed in alternation with the readings of Christ's last words.
The Seven Words of Christ on the Cross, originally composed for orchestra, is a work of profound spiritual and musical intensity.
Adapted for string quartet, this sublime, meditative composition resonates with particular power, exploring the final words spoken by Christ at his crucifixion.
For a string quartet, interpreting the "Seven Words of Christ" is both a challenge and a privilege.
The Opale Quartet, created in 2012, is made up of four talented and passionate young women, united by a friendship transformed into musical complicity.
Made up of Justine Vicens and Alexia Turiaf on violin, Charlotte Chollet on viola and Shani Megret on cello, each musician brings a particular richness and sensitivity to the ensemble.
