In 1172, King Alfons authorized the inhabitants of Rivesaltes and their suzerain to build a fortified enclosure around the church of Saint Mary, the town's first urban core.
Of the 7 towers, 4 are still partially visible. Only one gate allowed entry into Rivesaltes, located beneath the present-day clock tower.
